At Higgins Elementary, our youngest learners thrive with the SAVVAS PreK program, which provides a nurturing, hands-on approach to early education. This program is designed to engage curious minds with interactive, developmentally appropriate activities that promote social, emotional, and academic growth. Through play-based learning, children build foundational skills in literacy, math, science, and social studies, while also developing critical thinking and creativity. SAVVAS PreK fosters a love of learning from the very beginning, preparing our students for a successful educational journey with confidence and excitement.
Our K-1 literacy curriculum includes the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) reading program, designed to create confident, engaged readers. Amplify CKLA provides a rich blend of foundational skills and background knowledge, helping students develop not only reading fluency but also a deep understanding of diverse topics. The program emphasizes a balance between phonics-based instruction and building comprehension through meaningful content, fostering a well-rounded reading experience. Through engaging stories and hands-on activities, Amplify CKLA nurtures a love for reading and prepares students with the literacy skills they need to thrive.
At Higgins Elementary, our math instruction for kindergarten and first grade is powered by Eureka Math, a program designed to build confident and capable mathematicians. Eureka Math goes beyond traditional methods, focusing on deep comprehension of mathematical concepts rather than memorization. Through a carefully structured approach, students explore the "why" behind each concept, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our teachers guide students as they build connections between numbers, patterns, and real-world applications, making math both accessible and engaging. With Eureka Math, we aim to equip every student with a strong mathematical foundation that will support their success in school and beyond.
Our Gifted and Talented program begins testing as early as kindergarten, identifying and nurturing exceptional abilities from the onset. Once identified, GT students attend specialized classes one morning every week, where they engage in enriched learning experiences tailored to their unique talents and interests.
Our Reading Intervention program is powered by the evidence-based MClass intervention curriculum, grounded in the science of reading. Students participated in targeted, small-group sessions four times a week, focusing on developing the foundational skills necessary for reading success. Our goal is to provide personalized support so that students can build proficiency and enhance their reading abilities. We are dedicated to empowering every student to become confident and proficient readers.
Math Intervention classes provide targeted instruction and assessment for essential K–5 mathematics skills and concepts using Bridges Intervention curriculum. A strengths-based approach builds on each student’s abilities—starting with manipulatives, then moving to two-dimensional representations and mental images.
NLISD is dedicated to providing exceptional support to every child. Our Special Education services start as early as age 3, ensuring that young learners have access to the resources they need from the very beginning. Our full-time, certified therapists work closely with each child, offering individualized support that meets them right where they are. Through personalized programs and compassionate guidance, we help our students build the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
